Newborn Photo Session Tips

  • How far out do I need to book my session?   Because I only book 5 newborn sessions per month, it is recommended that you tentatively schedule your newborn session a few weeks/months before your baby is born to hold your space. We know that things don't always go as planned, and babies rarely arrive on their due dates, but I'll pencil you in and we can confirm the date and time after you deliver.

  • When should my session take place?  Newborn sessions take place between 2-10 days old.  However, the ideal age is 3-7 days old.  We’ll be moving them around and scrunching them into those sweet sleepy newborn images, so we want to make sure they’re sleepy enough to allow us to handle them.  Plus, babies just tend to do a lot better with the session within their first 7 days.  Somewhere around day 8 they discover the joy that is stretching! Once that happens…they’re not about to let us get them into those snuggly little poses without a fight!  After day 14, it’s almost impossible to get baby into that deep sleep that came so easily in their first few days…so it’s unlikely that we’ll be able to get them into any of the more squishy little newborn poses.

  • Where does the session take place? The majority of newborn sessions take place in your home or in my home studio.

  • What should I do to prepare for my Studio Session? Studio newborn sessions typically last about 2 hours depending upon baby's willingness to sleep.  A few tips to keep in mind prior to your session:
    • Make sure baby is nice and sleepy!  Most of the poses and shots work best when baby is in a deep sleep!  We can take as many breaks as needed for feedings and snuggling too.  Before getting baby to sleep, undress and wrap in a swaddle or sleep sack so that we can easily swaddle or wrap the baby without disturbing him/her after he or she falls asleep.
    • I have plenty of props including baskets, bowls, wraps, headbands, etc. to use for the session, but please feel free to bring whatever items you may want to incorporate as well.
    • If mom or dad are going to be in a few photos, neutral colored tops in a soft fabric look and work best. Try to avoid prints and patterns.
    • Keep in mind that if you are doing a lifestyle newborn session, getting baby to sleep isn't as important since you'll primarily be holding baby throughout the session.

  • What is a Lifestyle Session and what should I do to prepare?  In-home sessions are typically more of a lifestyle feel (baby in mom's arms on the rocking chair in nursery, mom and dad on bed cuddling baby, etc.  I will certainly bring "posey" items to your home so that we can do a few posed newborn shots, but the lifestyle session is meant to have a bit more of a documentary feel.  If you have opted for this type of session, there are a few tips to keep in mind if I am coming to your home:
    • Open up blinds and curtains prior to arrival - this will help me determine the best source of light in the home
    • Keep the house nice and toasty!  We will likely do some posing of the baby in light swaddles that aren't as cozy as the baby is used to, so keeping the house a bit warmer than usual is always ideal.  If you have a space heater, that works too!
